Congrats to everyone who took part in our 2012 Chrishanukwanzmadan Quiz. We had a lot of entries and it was great to see people still able to engage their brains while drinking beer over the Holidays!

One winner and five runners up were drawn this week. The top prize was $150 worth of Evil Genius beer, and a case of beer for each of the runners up.

The Quiz will be back December 1st this year, so if you didn’t win this year, best of luck on next years!

In the spirit of Movember, the Idiots at Evil Genius will be looking even more ridiculous this November. The team will be growing some awful looking mustaches and posting daily growth online. Be sure to keep an eye on Facebook and Twitter for the awesome pictures

In addition to taking part in the annual mustache growing Movember charity, Evil Genius is launching a beer called Movembeer!

Created by the winner of the Evil Genius - Philly Beer Week Blind hop contest, Michael Harkness, the brew will be available on draft in select accounts in Philadelphia and York Pennsylvania.

All profits from Movembeer will be split between two charities, the Movember Charity and the The Alysha Miller Harris Baby Fund.

The Movember Charity raises awareness and funds for men’s health issues, such as prostate cancer and depression.

The Alysha Miller Harris Baby Fund benefits the wife and unborn child of Ben Harris, an employee of Redhook Brewery who tragically died earlier this year when a plastic keg he was cleaning exploded.

Movembeer – Smoked Porter

In collaboration with Philadelphian Michael Harkness, Evil Genius created Movembeer. An American Smoked Porter with earthy hop flavors and a delicious malt finish. Notes of chocolate and coffee swirl around the smoky aroma and flavor.

Malts:  2 Rom, Smoked, Crystal, Black, and Chocolate

Hops: Magnum and  Tettnang

ABV: 5.4%

IBU: 28

Wait, a SIX-PACK with 3 IPA’s?!?!
Yes, that’s right. New from the Idiot’s at Evil Genius, we’re happy to introduce our EYECLOPS IPA Variety Pack. Much like our Pumpkin Patch, EYECLOPS is a collection of 3 different IPA’s in one six-pack. Included within is our EVIL EYE PA (American IPA), BLIND EYE PA (Belgian-Style IPA), and BLACK EYE PA (American Black IPA, hopped with Citra and Simcoe). Ask for it at your local beer store.
Also, we have been busy working with our new wholesalers in Scranton, Harrisburg, York, and State College. Make sure you check out our beer finder so see where you can grab a case of Evil Genius. If you live outside of PA, we have you covered. You can now order our beer online and we’ll deliver it right to your house at www.beerjobber.com.
We’ll be at the Kennett Brewfest this weekend, pouring our Hunchback Hefe, Blind Eye PA, and Trick or Treat (for those who are attending the connoisseur tasting). Hope to see you there.

Sometimes when I reflect back on all the beer I drink, I feel
ashamed. Then I look into the glass and think about the workers
in the brewery and all of their hopes and dreams. If I didn’t
drink this beer, they might be out of work and their dreams
would be shattered. Then I say to myself, “It is better that
I drink this beer and let their dreams come true than be selfish
and worry about my liver

It’s the Great Pumpkin Arms Race!

We touched on the craziness of how early Pumpkins are coming out yesterday on the blog. Although we’d prefer to pick and choose the exact date for Pumpkins to arrive (probably around late September/early October), this isn’t realistic for a variety of reason.

We’ve also seen a couple of people complain that Pumpkin beers coming out at this time of the year aren’t using this years Pumpkin crop. They’re not, nor do most breweries pretend they are. Pumpkins aren’t harvested until October/November, so unless a beer is coming out in November or later, it’s likely to be using last years crop. We also find it funny for a brewery to complain about this, when they themselves have used last years crop in the past.

Most Pumpkin Beers actually focus more on the spices than the actual Pumpkin flavor itself. Pumpkin has such an earthy subtle flavor. There’s a reason why we put spices in the pie. A Pumpkin pie without any of the spices wouldn’t taste all that great. They’re added to enhance the Pumpkin flavor, not hide it.

Capacity: Almost every brewery has a limited capacity. To schedule Pumpkin beers in around the various other year round beers that we all make, we need to start brewing Pumpkin beers in June/July. This ensures that none of our other beers go out of stock. The last thing any of us want is for customers to be unable to get the beer they want. This is even more difficult for the larger craft breweries as the demand for their Pumpkin beers is far greater than ours, meaning they have to allocate far more capacity that we do, meaning they need to start brewing very early to meet the demand.

Fear: Wholesalers also put breweries under pressure to get the Pumpkins out early. They in turn are under pressure from the retails to get it to them. It’s a Pumpkin Arms race, with no one wanting to be the last one out of the gate and be left with Pumpkin beers in December. The irony is that customer will find it hard to find ANY Pumpkin beers by November 1st. The only one’s available at the a point will be some fresh Pumpkin beers (these will be very limited) and ones that didn’t sell well.

Demand: We can all complain about how we’d like Pumpkin beers to come out later, but interestingly enough, people WANT to buy them now. No one forces anyone to go into a store and pick up a case or six pack of Pumpkin beer. (And most people don’t realize they should get it now before it’s all gone). People see the packages and want to buy them. It might be still hot out, but as the evening cools down, a nice Pumpkin beer after a meal (even in August) can be absolutely delicious.

Grab some Pumpkin while it lasts, and enjoy it when you feel like it!

We’re on our way to Philadelphia wholesaler, Origlio Beverage to launch our new bottle products. We had a gap in production of bottles while we moved from South Bend IN to Milford NY (new Federal approvals, new label printing) and just recently were able to ship our new bottles of Good ‘n Evil, and the to launch Evil EYE PA in bottles.
Not only those two, but we just shipped in our Pumpkin variety pack, Pumpkin Patch. That should hit stores in a couple of weeks. What’s really crazy is that you might think it’s coming out early, but we’re almost late to the game. The local Wegmans has had massive displays of Pumpkin beer for over two weeks now. With 95 degree weather.
